The Wearn Legacy: Generations United for Country Kids
Bill Wearn exemplifies dedication and passion as a long-time participant in this year’s Ride for Country Kids, marking his 10th ride in support of country kids. But Bill doesn’t take on this monumental challenge alone — he is joined by his brothers, Rob and Adrian, along with his nephews, Tom and Matt, making the Ride a true family affair. Their collective efforts reflect a legacy of care and commitment that has spanned generations.
“Fraser’s friends”, which is the name of Bill’s team, commenced ten years ago and traces back to the tragic passing of Bill’s son, Fraser John Wearn, in 2012 at just ten years old. Seeking solace in fitness and wellbeing, Bill joined his first Ride for Country Kids and embarked on this journey alongside family and friends.
This experience has also provided Bill with a meaningful connection to his grandparents, Walter and Polly, whose unwavering commitment to children’s health in remote areas helped shape the foundation of Royal Far West.
Bill’s grandfather, Dr. Walter John Wearn, was a pioneer in children’s health in rural New South Wales. An expert in dentistry, he devoted over two decades to Royal Far West, traveling through regional NSW to provide essential dental care to children in need. His lasting impact is honored with a conference room bearing his family’s name at Royal Far West’s Centre for Country Kids in Manly.
The Wearn family’s legacy continues through Bill’s deep appreciation for his grandfather and grandmother, Polly. Polly, a compassionate and kind soul, beautifully captured the experiences of children at Royal Far West in her book, the Magic Shoulder, while Walter, a hardworking and deeply connected individual, instilled a profound respect for the land, soil and wellbeing of communities.
During a recent visit to the museum in Cobar, Bill was moved by the sight of an early Royal Far West train carriage alongside an image of his grandparents — a poignant reminder of their enduring legacy. Through these personal connections and ongoing efforts, Bill continues to honor the values passed down through generations — resilience, compassion and an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of country children.
