I’m getting back on my bike, riding even further for country kids with developmental and mental health problems!

Last year was magical — meeting kids and families I’d worked with over the years, hearing from community elders and leaders, sharing stories with other riders along the way, and each day cycling toward the Western Plains’ horizon among the cotton, canola, cattle and goats. 

This year I’m also inspired by my grandfather, Dr Jacob Zimmet, who was a rural doctor in the 1940s. Visiting Whyalla Hospital last November, we discovered photos of him mid-operation, his annual report as acting Medical Superintendent, and my grandmother Anne with my toddler father at a social event. It brought to life our family’s connection to rural Australia as new immigrants who gave their working lives to country communities.
 
That legacy feeds directly into my work today as Chief Medical Officer at RFW, strengthening clinical services for country kids and ensuring no country child is left behind.

Waiting lists for rural and remote kids to see allied health clinicians, psychiatrists and paediatricians remain unacceptably high.
